15 Truly Essential Essential Oils

Do you remember when you first fell in love with essential oils?

Completely acknowledge my age here, but I was in high school and living in England when The Body Shop was the coolest, most awesome shop. I never missed a chance to stop in one. I especially loved the lavender and eucalyptus blend, and it is still my favorite today.

Over the years I have tried many different oils. The following 15 are the ones I think are the best therapeutically with the strongest scents and a part of my essential oil toolbox. However, everyone has a unique scent palette and everybody reacts differently to the benefits of oils. I would love to hear what your favorite oils are and why, so please leave a comment.

(If you haven’t ever fallen in love with essential oils, do yourself a favor and pick one from the list below that sounds appealing and try it!)

  1. Cedarwood: a strong, balsam-like fragrance is also a useful antiseptic and digestive. Its deep earthy notes are calming and harmonizing creating a positive balance in the air. Evoking memories of walks in the forest, this oil can aid in relaxation and meditation.
  2. Cinnamon: a spice with an unforgettable scent often associated with comfort food, it contains healing properties for nausea, fatigue, and depression. It is also an antiseptic and a digestive. It should be avoided by pregnant people.
  3. Eucalyptus: one of the most aromatic scents in the world, it has powerful healing, disinfecting, and antioxidant properties. Uplifting and stimulating, this amazing oil can cleanse and disinfect the air as well as elevate your mood.
  4. Frankincense: one of the more expensive oils, it’s still a great addition to creams and salves to alleviate pain, but it also aids in breathing and calming nerves. Its deep and rich qualities have been exalted since ancient times as a powerful and spiritual perfume.
  5. Ginger: amazing in teas and sweets, ginger has incredible warming properties that can aid in digestion, anxiety, and stress. It also has relaxing effects on muscles and inflammation making it a great base for massage oils. Its sweet scent is comforting and peaceful creating an inviting space.
  6. Jasmine: known for its soothing and cleansing effects on skin, is used in cosmetics, and aids in increasing the skin’s elasticity. However, its exotic and heady fragrance has been used for centuries to woo lovers and the gods.
  7. Lavender: universally adored, this gift from heaven bestows on us mortals powerful healing from everything reducing the stings from insects to calming inflammation. It aids in sleep and relaxation, settles nerves, and relieves headaches. Lavender is great for keeping bugs away but is one of the few oils that can be used undiluted on the skin.
  8. Lemon: tart and tangy, lemon oil can be used as a cosmetic to tone and control skin blemishes. It cleans the air and restores balance, making it an ideal scent for candles and diffusers. It is also a natural cleanser, neutralizing bad smells and bacteria.
  9. Lemon Eucalyptus: Known for cleansing the air and surface, this oil is highly effective against invasive insects like mosquitoes due to its citronella properties. It is not part of the eucalyptus family but is its tree. It can kill fungi and is invigorating to the senses. It is highly fragrant that lasts making it a better insect control than citronella.
  10. Mint: whether it is peppermint, spearmint, wintermint, or any other variety of mint, this incredible herb is not only tenacious and thrives everywhere, it is an incredible aid for digestion, nausea, bad breath, and respiratory problems. It is a powerful disinfectant and keeps rodents away. Its cooling properties help calm skin, relieve muscle pain, and clear the mind.
  11. Patchouli: its strong and persistent smell makes for an incredible skin oil. Fondly reminiscent of peace and love, patchouli loves company and makes a wonderful blend with many other oils for complex scents. A sedative and aphrodisiac, this oil is also great for dry skin and minor burns.
  12. Pine: used for cleaning and a staple for the holidays, pine oil is abundant and familiar, but very much one of my ultimate favorites. It is great for treating respiratory infections when used as an inhalant and as an antiseptic. It can cause skin irritations, but its fragrance can stimulate the senses and improve air quality.
  13. Rose: by any other name, one cannot mistake the intoxicating smell of rose. Bringing memories of warm summer days rose oil can brighten the coldest of days. Used in cosmetics since ancient times, this symbol of love and romance is also good for soothing and cleansing the body, aiding female systems, and stress.
  14. Rosemary: not just great for cooking, rosemary oil is wonderful for helping hair loss and treating scalps. Its stimulating properties aid in relieving sore muscles and help the memory.
  15. Ylang Ylang: heralded as an aphrodisiac, Ylang Ylang oil is produced from the flower of the Java tree. It is considered an antidepressant, soothing emotions like stress, anger, and shock. Its unique floral perfume makes it a great accompaniment to other floral oils to create a complex scent bouquet
