Cultivating Hope: A Mother’s Mission

Greetings from the Dandelion+Burdock homestead!

As I hustle through various projects before the heat becomes too intense, I’m acutely aware of the severe weather predictions for this year. I sincerely hope you and your loved ones stay safe and unaffected.

As an environmentalist deeply concerned with climate change, I’ve been reflecting on my efforts both on my land and through this blog. I’m excited to finally share its name with you: Eco Prep Living. This name captures the essence of my vision for the homestead, which strives for a harmonious balance between sustainable living and preparedness for potential disruptions.

Homesteading resonates deeply with me, but there’s an additional motivation behind it. I believe there’s a high probability that humanity will face serious fallout from climate change in the coming years. As a mother, I want to leave my son with options. By creating a sustainable homestead, I aim to provide him with a refuge in a future that could very well include food and energy scarcity.

Yours truly (Suzanne) with my son, Keelan, 2024

At just 23, my son is likely to experience a very different world than the one we know. Despite growing awareness and efforts to combat climate change, I fear global action won’t come fast enough to avert its worst impacts. The science is clear, and the predictions are becoming reality. The only course left is to prepare—for our children and their future children.

Often, my son expresses his anxieties about the future with the phrase, “if there is one.” The fear of a collapsing world is more acute in our kids than it ever was for us. I want to offer him an alternative: a safe, self-sustaining home where he can build the commune we often joke about.

Maybe you have had similar conversations with your kids? I don’t have a comprehensive game plan or even remotely the knowledge, but I am committed to this lifestyle. Want to come along? Whether you live in a city, suburb, or out in the sticks like me, there are lots of ways we can prepare for an uncertain future, build resilience in our children, and gift them skills we have since lost in our modern age.

Eco Prep Lifestyle

Eco Prep Living, or ecological preparedness living, is a lifestyle that combines principles of environmental sustainability with readiness for emergencies and self-sufficiency. Key areas include:

1. Sustainability: Implementing eco-friendly practices such as reducing waste, conserving water and energy, and using renewable resources.

2. Self-sufficiency: Growing one’s own food, harvesting rainwater, and generating power through solar or wind energy.

3. Preparedness: Being prepared for natural disasters or other emergencies with stocked supplies, emergency plans, and resilient infrastructure.

4. Minimalism: Reducing consumption and living with fewer, more essential items to minimize ecological footprints.

5. Community Focus: Building resilient communities that support each other through resource sharing and cooperative living.

These components drive this blog’s topics and also include product reviews to help accomplish my self-sufficiency goals. Join  me on this journey and let’s work towards creating a resilient and sustainable future together.
